18 minutes to achieve something good

18 minutes…

The other day I saw something on social media that if you do something for 18 minutes per day, you will be better than most people at that thing.

Basically, it takes 18 minutes to get good at something. You may not be the best at it but 18 minutes per day for one year will equal 109 hours per year. Practicing something for over 100 hours per year is about the amount of practice you need to go from incompetent at something to being one of the good ones at it. Probably not Michael Jordan level but the point is to be consistent.

Pick 3 things to get good at and do it for 18 minutes per day. Here are a few…

18 minutes of playing the guitar.

18 minutes of learning how to code and then coding.

18 minutes of writing.

18 minutes of cooking.

18 minutes of exercising.

18 minutes of cleaning your house.

18 minutes of socializing.

18 minutes of cold calling.

18 minutes of practicing interviewing.

18 minutes of reading.

18 minutes of anything…

But be careful because 18 minutes of the wrong things can create crap in your life that you don’t need.

It adds up. I am no self help specialist but doing anything besides watching Netflix shows is hard and the question you have to ask yourself is how much pain are you willing to endure?

The New Year is coming and it’s time to look at those goals. Whatever you choose to focus on, do it for 18 minutes per day.

PS - I spent 18 minutes writing this newsletter today. Well, maybe a little more than 18 minutes but you get the point.
