People are spending more time alone than ever.
I like being alone—early mornings with coffee, no distractions, just me and my thoughts. That’s intentional. But loneliness? That’s different. And according to The Atlantic, more people are feeling it, and it’s changing how we behave and work.
Being alone is a physical state—it can fuel creativity, productivity, or just give you space to think. Being lonely is an emotional state, and it’s not good for anyone.
The Loneliest Place? A Crowded Room.
I’ve been hitting a lot of networking events to kick off the year, and here’s something I’ve noticed: a lot of people feel alone in a room full of people. You can work in an industry for years, know plenty of people, and still feel like no one quite gets what you’re going through.
And guess what? They’re probably feeling the same way.
Next time you’re in that situation, resist the urge to retreat into your phone. Push through the discomfort, make a real connection, and remember—nobody shows up to an event hoping to leave without a conversation.
Candidates Are Alone, Too.
For job seekers, the hiring process can be brutal. Rejection outnumbers wins, and by the time they get to your interview, they might be exhausted, nervous, or under massive pressure to land something—anything.
Recruiters and hiring managers, here’s your job:
✅ Be organized. Respect their time.
✅ Follow up. Silence is worse than a “no.”
✅ Recognize the human side. A little empathy goes a long way.
Candidates are alone enough—don’t let them feel lonely, too.
This world isn’t built for loneliness—it’s built for connection. So get out there, have real conversations, and be the person who makes someone feel seen. You never know what doors that might open.
Now, I’ve had enough alone time this morning. Time to get uncomfortable, make connections, and maybe even help someone land their next job.
P.S. Hat tip to Everlast’s song Lonely Road:
“My back is strong, I carry the load… I walk along the lonely road.”
Good reminder: walking alone can make you stronger—but connection is what keeps us going.
